OSG EXPORTER for 3DS MAX - Y-up

I'm using the new osgexp for 3DS Max 2013 64-bit and it seems that there is no longer an option to specify the output as y-up. Everything I have exported is therefore displayed by OSG with the Z and Y axes flipped.

I'd be hugely grateful if anyone who's used this and overcome the issue would point me in the right direction.

I'd also be very interested to know why OSG uses y (a lateral axis) as up. I'm sure this can't have just been a mistake, but really can't get my head around why it throws out convention.

Thanks,

C

I don't recall there ever being an option to specify the output as Y-up. Which version were you using that contained this option? As far as I remember, the exporter has always used the OSGs Z-up convention.

Cheers,

As far as I know, OSG doesn't use y as up. The osgGA library provides
CameraManipulator classes that (generally) use +z as up, but of course this is
merely a default that the application can modify.

With respect to plugin behavior, I'm of the opinion that they should perform
*no* re-orientation by default. However, a) the OSG community is split on this
issue, and b) there were already many plugins in existence before I came along,
and changing them now would break existing apps. This is not a trivial issue.

osgexp "up vector" orientation problem.

I know this is an old thread, but I would like to ask the original poster if he ever found a resolution to this issue.

I have also found that after a recent update to osgexp my model's "up" orientation has changed.

...

Thank you!

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Which version of the exporter are you using? Did you use one of the pre-built installers, and if so where did you download the installer?

Cheers,
Farshid

Hi Tim,

That exporter should behave correctly, meaning it should export the model in OSGs Z-up coordinate system. Which version were you previously using that exported as Y-up?

Cheers,
Farshid
