Migration to a new forum/ML server and technology
Reply with quote

Hi All,

Our forum has been limping along for quite a few years now, the server
it's presently on is one we need to migrate away from so we need to
decide what to do about what we do for the forum/ML going forward.

We have the dreamhost server that presently hosts the website and the
osg-users and osg-submissions mailing list. The source code is now
host on github and this is now running smoothly and means largely that
osg-submissions is far less used so potentially we could close it and
just use osg-users for the occasional submission that doesn't come via
github PR's.

The osg-users ML has been working away pretty reliably so there isn't
any pressing need to migrate like we forum. Whatever we migrate the
forum to I'd like to maintain ability for posts to be cross posted - I
simply don't have the time to go spreading myself a Mailing List and
forum to do community support, also having info spread across two
mediums just isn't go for keeping track the various community
discussions.

I'm writing this post as a call for feedback/suggestions as to what
route we could following going forward for the forum and ML
integration. Whatever the final solution will be it'll need to
minimize the cost of supporting the tech on the server and moderating
it.

As a fallback one possibility would be to just get all present forum
users to join the googlegroups OpenSceneGraph that currently mirrors
the osg-users mailing list:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/osg-users

The advantage of googleroups is that already has all our history in a
searchable form and is ready to go. The disadvantage is that it's
part of the google...

So let me know your thoughts of what solutions might be viable.

Cheers,
Robert.

I'm ok with the Google thing.

Alternately, we could probably pick up and move the current forum software to different hosting. I don't use the actual forum so I'm not aware of what issues it might be having that might need fixing, or if it should just be dumped entirely.

The forum has long been been under strain from the need for moderation
and moderation being tackled by too few people. We've done quite a
few calls for help but over the last years the only one to properly
step up to the plate and help out is Sebastian. The forum is also
hosted on a server we don't have access to and is there through
benevolence of Art Tev's, he can't maintain it forever though.

We moving from the existing forum sever I also want to tackle the
moderator issue - we can't have members of the community having their
time sucked up with admin duties if we can avoid it. As much as
possible we should be coding and communicating with each other rather
than chasing admin tasks.

I also feel that the community isn't busy as it once was, we are well
established project now, we don't have quite the same seat of the
pants/trying to keep ahead of the big wave that we once had when 30 or
40 posts a day were the norm. Given a quieter community I think the
overheads associated with maintaining the forum should be come down
proportionally, if we can make the need for moderators a thing of past
then this would be a good step forward.

Robert.

Ok. Thanks for the background. I was unfamiliar with the situation.

For purposes of discussion, do you believe the Google forum would improve on this in any way?

It would solve the dual ML/forum issue and not require a new server to
be set up.

One issue we'd need to resolve is who is the current owner of the
"OpenSceneGraph Users". I can't see a why of finding out who that is
from the web interface right now.

An open issue would be whether we'd need to do the same moderation
that is done on the forum right now. One of the reasons for having
moderation is catching bots, policing poor etiquette and encouraging
users not to inhuman names.

Robert.

I'm not sure I understand that issue.

My understanding was that this list was being run by some listserv software on a computer controlled by you -- probably the dreamhost server. So, i'm not clear on what ownership means here.

Probably will require some moderation, yes. I moderate a small google groups list for glslDebugger, and this is a necessary task. I'd be willing to help moderate Google Groups signups, but there should be others who step up too.

We have Mailman hosted by dreamhost that does osg-users and osg-submissions.

The OpenSceneGraph Users mailing list is a mirror of the osg-users
mailing list. I don't know who set it up or when. I just became
aware at some point a long time back. Would be good to get to bottom
of who set it up and transfer ownership to someone else presently
active in the community.

Skipping the bulk of the conversation:
I'd be willing to invest time into moderation as well if there is a new system to handle it. The old forum is simply cluttered with ten thousands of dead/old/spam accounts. So a fresh start is welcome.

Cheers
Sebastian
